An Explanation of Rules and Guidelines
Rules, laws, guideline can be a difficult thing for students to swallow. Usually there is at least one rule listed below that each student has a problem with. We have had some great conversations with students over the years about rules and why they exist. We are always open to answering questions about why we make rules and the origin of the rules. We have learned a lot from our students and we are open to learning more. Here is some of what we have learned.
We don't like rules any more than the next person. And we don't want to make a big deal out of our rules. And we don't have to make a big deal out of them as long as students are submitting to them.
Our System of Accountability and Consequences
In a structured environment it is important to understand when rules are violated and what the consequences will be. We want to be as clear as possible in advance to communicate our rules so that there is no misunderstanding when a student is corrected.
When a student violates one of the rules, our staff will write that student up and notify them of the violation. When the second "write up" is issued there will be a consequence determined by the dean of men/dean of women. If a student receives three "write ups" within a semester they will need to speak with the director and dean. They will determine what consequences need to be put in place.
If a student is not responsive to correction and willing to change that student will be dismissed from the program.
Some rules qualify for immediate dismissal. Those would include: fornication, violence, illegal behavior, and open rebellion with no intention to change.
Introduction to Christian Behavior
We desire to see you grow in your relationship with the Lord while you are here, and ask that you establish the viability of your actions by imitating Christ. Are your actions and thoughts pleasing to God? Here is a litmus test for gauging our actions.
Is it to the glory of God?“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Cor. 10:31
Is it helpful in my walk with the Lord even though it may be a liberty?“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” 1 Cor. 10:23
Does it have a appearance of evil?“Abstain form every appearance of evil.” 1 Thess. 5:22
Does it contribute to a wholesome and Christ like atmosphere?“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” 2 Cor. 6:14
Does it withstand the Phil.4:8 test?“Finally, brethren, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things.” Phil. 4:8
Lastly are these things being done to benefit others?“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4
Facilities
Please pick up your trash and clean up after yourself at all times. If you see trash laying around please just pick it up. If you do, you will be serving others and a good steward of the facilities
Please be respectful of all furniture. Do not lean back on chairs, stick gum on things, jump on any of the furniture in any way.
Keep the outsides of your living quarters clean. Don’t leave towels, dirty laundry, or trash just sitting outside of your living quarters. Please keep the appearance neat and orderly.
Out of respect for your roommates, your laundry needs to be in a bag. There is to be no dirty laundry laying around, or stacked up on beds. It stinks up the room and others do not want to live in that.
When Something is Broken: If you break something please report it immediately. If something is broken in a room and no one is willing to admit to it, than the whole room will be billed for the damage. If you break something due to negligence or horseplay you will be required to pay for it to be fixed.
If you break something please do not attempt to patch it up halfway to make it seem as thought it is fine when it needs to be fixed right.
Men: please keep in mind that each tent costs $2,200 and it is not cheap to fix. If a student damages any part of the tent they will be held financially responsible.
Women: Please fill out the maintenance request form and turn it in to Rachel’s Box. Do not try to fix it yourself. Anything that is broken due to negligence or horseplay will be charged accordingly to the person(s) involved.
Dorm Inspections:
Men: Every Tuesday evening their will be dorm inspection. All cleaning needs to be completed by the time of inspection.
Women: Every Wednesday there will be a weekly check on the cleanliness of the room and bathroom. All cleaning needs to be completed by the time of the inspection. Dusting, toilet, shower, floors, trash, sink area.
Kitchen and Dining:
Men: The men's kitchen facility is to be used by staff and M199s exclusively. Students and staff are not allowed to store food in the fridge or the freezer. The cooking utensils are to only be used by the staff. The BBQ, stove and any other cooking element is not to be used by any one except the kitchen staff. The reason that we have these rules is so that we can maintain our limited resources in the kitchen, keep the kitchen organized and keep people safe.
In the general dining areas everyone needs to clean up after themselves.
Keep your personal food storage clean (to prevent ants and other insects!)
Women: Put your name and date on food that you put in the refrigerator and freezer. We are to keep this especially clean because it is community storage.
Don’t remove silverware, cups, or plates from the kitchen and dining area, unless you have your own personal mug / cup.
No food is to be eaten in the bedrooms or bathrooms.
Food is not accessible in the upstairs kitchen after 10:30 PM
Women’s House:
The Wailua Care Home is not open to the public. No men are allowed in women’s dorms. In order to maintain the general security, we ask that if you have guests from the community coming to visit you that you either meet downtown or at the church property. Women may visit as long as they are escorted by a resident.
A guest room is available up at the WCH for family and female friends. If a student would like to book this room for a guest they will need to fill out the guest request form at least three weeks in advance. The Bible College reserves the right to turn any request down. Some of the reasons for rejecting a guest request would be the time during the semester the person is visiting, the spiritual condition of the guest, the room is already booked. No guest may stay longer than seven days. All guest are required to buy their own food while visiting. Please refer to the guest request form for more guidelines regarding guest.
Music may be played quietly in bedrooms. In any community area at the Wailua House, the music needs to be on headphones. Music may be played outloud only if those studying ask for it to be played.
After curfew all lights need to be off, except for nightlights, in order to conserve electricity and to not disturb our neighbors.
There is a “No Pets” policy for the women’s housing.
Use artist’s putty to hang things on the wall. No tacks, nails, etc.
The gate will be locked at 12:00 AM.
Report any suspicious behavior / person to Rachel or Amy immediately.
Park in the spots provided and where it is not obstructing the driveway etc.
No guest/visitors under 18 are permitted on the property without parental consent.
Please treat the entire facility as a study area. There should be no yelling, screaming, loud laughing, or other loud noises that would interfere with someone's studying.
Men’s Campus:
In general the church campus gate closes at 9:30 PM and opens at 6:00 AM. On class nights the gate will close after class is out. If you arrive at the gate after it is locked please park your vehicle off to the side until the gate is reopened in the morning.
If you have any questions about a stranger on the property or strange situations arising please inform Mark Swenson or Chris Cary about these things. We will deal with them on a case by case basis.
Please do not invite the public to the lower part of the church property. Guest from the community need to stay up on the upper parcel of the church. We don’t want the community familiar with the guys campus or the U-Turn ranch.
Women are not to be on church grounds pass 9:00 PM unless class goes long. All women need to be off the church property after 9:00 PM or as soon as their class is dismissed.
Women are allowed to be at the men’s camp during the day. No women are allowed on the men’s tent decks or in the tents.
Women are not allowed to eat the men’s food. They need to use their own food allowance for their food.
Women are not allowed any where near the U-Turn camp. Please stay in the immediate area of the Bible College. Also note, the men in the U-Turn program are not allowed to talk to women, so please do not try to start a conversation with them.
Please be mindful when church is in session and or having functions. If you are not participating in the service or function, please do not be a distraction. Keep things down. This church has invited us all here and we want to be a good witness and a blessing to them.
Please prefer the people in the body here before yourselves. Let them have the best parking spots. Let them be the first to get food after church. Be their servant in everything. (pick up chairs, trash, etc.)
Children (any one under the age of 18) are not allowed in the men’s tents for any reason. If there are any questions please ask Mark Swenson or Chris Carry.
Please do not construct anything on the property that is not first approved by Bobby Keao and George Casteneda. This would include tree houses, holes of any kind, ramps, swings, slides, or any other constructed thing.
Student Life
Showers:
Men: Limit your showers to 5 minutes or less. Do not take showers at the women’s house.
Women: Limit your showers to 10 minutes because of the shortage of hot water. There will be others waiting to take showers and not everyone will have time if you take 15 - 20 minute showers. This is just general respect for others.
Also, there is no taking showers after 10:30 PM at night. It tends to keep other people up who are trying to sleep.
Quiet Time:
9:00 PM - 7:00 AM is quiet time. Personal book lights / flash lights etc. may be used, but the overhead lights need to be turned off. During quiet time there is no talking, whispering, laughing, etc. in or around the bedrooms or hallways. This time is set aside for personal devotions, study, prayer, and for sleep.
Curfew:
Students must be in bed with lights out by 12:00 AM. Curfew applies to the entire week and weekend. We have a curfew for three reasons. First, we want our students to get a good night sleep, this cannot happen if people are walking into the dorm room at all hours of the night. Second, night time is when most evil things take place. We have a sense of responsibility over your lives and we do not want anything to happen to you at night. Third, we have some students that are underage attending the college.
Men: If you break curfew, you are required to check in with Mark Swenson.
Women: If you break curfew, you are required to check in with Rachel.
Vehicles
If a student purchases a vehicle while in Kauai they must own and operate it legally with insurance and up-to-date registration.
None of the vehicles owned by the men in the Bible College should be parked on the hill top where the church is. Please keep all vehicles parked down below in the available men's campus parking spots.
All vehicles owned by students need to be operated legally. This means that the vehicle must be registered in the students name with current registration, and insurance.
The speed limit while on the property is 10 MPH.
Any damage incurred by a student's vehicle will be the financial responsibility of the student.
Each individual student is responsible for their own transportation to and from classes. The staff will sometimes offer rides to the church property and into town. Sometimes students will be willing to give rides to one another. We ask that a standard rate of $1.00 be provided per way when getting a ride from the Wailua Care Home into town. And the same amount when traveling back. This applies to any driver: student or staff. It is up to the driver to waive this standard fee.
Community Conduct and Maintaining a Good Witness:
Give good tips at the places where you eat. (15% is the cultural average.)
Clean up after yourselves in the coffee shops you go to. As well do not go in to these coffee shops and use the internet and not buy a drink. Nor should you go in and buy only one drink and stay there for eight hours.
Be respectful, kind, clean, seeking to maintain a good witness for the church and school. Ultimately a good witness for Christ. Be sensitive to the culture and do not make fun of it, and obey the laws of the land.
Unacceptable Behavior:
Use of alcohol, tobacco, or any illegal drugs. (KBC is a non-smoking facility.)
Ignoring or breaking any law of the State of Hawaii or the United States of America.
Sexual Immorality
Violence of ANY kind, including threats of violence, foul / vulgar language.
No weapons.
Entertainment:
Our rules about entertainment are intended to create a distraction free environment. We don't believe that movies, music and video games are sin, but we do believe that they constitute a distraction and waste of time. Also, our young generation has been trained to worship entertainment. It is an addiction for many people. For those people, Bible College is an awesome opportunity to be set free from this addiction and learn to offer their minds and emotions to the Lord. In light of that our entertainment rules are as follows.
No profane music. All audio must be played on headphones in respect to everyone in the tents.
Please do not bring any books, video games, or movies that depict any type of sorcery, magic, witchcraft, etc. . . An example is Harry Potter material. It is not to be in your possession while
here at the bible college.
Students are not allowed to watch movies or play video/computer games on the church property or women's housing property without the permission of the dean of men or dean of women.
Instruments must be played in the church tents or auxiliary tents.
Signing out for the weekend
There will be a sign-out sheet when you take a weekend vacation. It is important so that we may contact you in an emergency situation. There is no allowance for spending the night elsewhere during the school week. Thus includes no “All-nighters” for trying to get homework done etc.
How Shall We Then Dress?
Jesus is the standard for our lives and the way we conduct ourselves. One of the reasons for our dress code is to encourage men and women to focus on the Lord and not to be distracted by the physical appearance of their classmates. For this reason, we ask that all would dress modestly. We must remember to have discretion according to each person’s body type.
No cleavage (in front or back)
No midriff when standing with arms at sides.
Shorts and skirts cannot reveal upper thigh.
Any clothing that is considered too tight or revealing at the Dean of Men / Women’s discretion.
Pull up pants shorts etc. in the presence of women.
Women’s Swim-wear: They may wear a two piece, but out of the water need to have on board shorts.
Men’s Swim-wear: Please pull your board-shorts up and avoid wearing Spedos.
Tattoos- Please consider your testimony and relationship with you parents before you get a tattoo.
Relationships: Your relationship’s should exemplify the love of Christ. Be polite, loving and considerate. Think of others first and pray for a servant’s heart. Male/female relationships should always demonstrate purity. Any couple who develops a relationship should nurture the spiritual aspect of their relationship above their emotional or physical relationship. The physical aspects of a male/female relationship are often the most difficult to keep pure. Be careful to keep your relationship in a place where it honors the Lord. 1 Timothy 5:2 and 1 Corinthians 7:1 teach men to treat young women as sisters, with all purity. Consider carefully why you are pursuing this relationship. Is it led by the Holy Spirit? Is it leading you closer to God and His plan for your life? If so, go for it. If the Lord chooses to put someone into your life, consider yourself blessed.
While on campus physical touch needs to limited to holding hands.
At the Wailua House, no laying down on floor with opposite sex.
A boy and a girl cannot be at the house alone
No slumber parties. You need to sleep in your own bed and not in someone else's. This is applicable for both men and women.
Roommates: Pray for one another regularly. Submit to one another. Take the lower road. Seek to be the servant of all. Love, be tolerant, and be willing to deal with anything. However, at the same time, be quick to ask God to change your heart on things for the benefit of others. Do not use anyone else’s personal items or clothing, (i.e.: blow dryers, razors, shaving cream, hair spray, shampoo, tooth brush, etc.) without first getting permission from the owner. Do not assume it will be OK. Borrowing without asking is considered stealing. Problems:If there is a problem or conflict of interest, act in a biblical manner. First, take it to the Lord in prayer, and then refer to His word. If matters are not resolved on a person to person basis, then take it to Rachel or Mark. “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.' And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17 First seek to resolves the problem among yourselves but if this is not possible please come talk to the Dean of Men or the Dean of Women.
- If a person is living the crucified life and ready to be a disciple of Jesus they are not very concerned about the rules. Any discomfort or inconvenience that a rule may impose is no problem, because they understand that their life is not their own. They are willing to submit because it was the example that Jesus left.
- Rules are important because they define the structure that we operate in. Most of the time a rule exists for the sake of being loving to others. Rules also keep people safe, and the facilities well cared for.
- A repeated rebellion to the rules is a selfish decision that reveals to us as a staff that that person is not ready for Bible College.
- Students agree to submit to the rules by applying to the school and pursuing admittance to the program. If students don't like the structure and rules that the Bible College issues they should not apply or plan on attending.
- Just because something is not against the rules in our rule book does not mean that it is OK to do. We are trusting that each student has the Holy Spirit actively convicting them of what is right and what is wrong. We are excited to see students governed by the Holy Spirit and not only our rule book.
We don't like rules any more than the next person. And we don't want to make a big deal out of our rules. And we don't have to make a big deal out of them as long as students are submitting to them.
